LOTR LEGO - Customer Honest Review

Exciting new fortress design that should satisfy both LotR fans and LEGO collectors, By Ron Cole

LOTR LEGO 9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep

LEGO Lord of the Rings Master 9474

9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep is a 1368 piece LEGO set initially released in May of 2012. It is part of the first wave of LEGO sets featuring Lord of the Rings. LOTR LEGO set allows you to build Helm's Deep, a pivotal location in the LotR volume/movie The Two Towers. The set also includes 8 minifigures (Aragorn, Gimli, King Theoden, Haldir, a berserker Uruk-hai, and three additional Uruk-hai), a horse, ladder, and various accessories (weapons, armor, etc..). If you looked at the box and thought, "Isn't Legolas the Elf in this set?" The technical answer is, "No, that is Haldir.. but the figures are so similar, most people won't be able to tell them apart." Legolas is in set 9473 the Mines of Moria - take a look at the box art of both and see if you can tell the difference between the elfs beyond outfits).

Lord Of The Rings LEGO, The Horn of Helm Hammerhand has been noticeably done (the trumpet-looking things coming out of the top of the tower), there is a collapsing wall section over a culvert/stream, and a path made with plates that simulates the ramp/path into Helm's Deep. Lord of the Rings fans will love this set. It is pricey, but it is also a very nice rendition of Helm's Deep. For this price, though, I would have liked to have received more horses with this set (that's a key part of the movie, after all) and some extra spear-weapons (also from the movie).

As a fan of the LEGO Castle and Kingdoms lines, I'm also pretty happy. It is nice to see that LOTR LEGO has finally moved away from the traditional castle design they've used so often with only minor modifications (at least for a little while). There are enough bricks here that, if you get tired of Helm's Deep, you can make another nice castle with relative ease. The Uruk-hai minifigs (a sort of super-orc) mesh well with previous fantasy minifigs (Castles), but the humans have cream-colored flesh that is significantly different from the traditional LEGO minifig yellow. The set could have used some extra weapons/treasure/accessories in my opinion, but the selection isn't terrible.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars. Lord Of The Rings LEGO or LOTR LEGO is a very interesting and well-designed set, but it could have used a few more extras for the price.

Note: Set 9471 The Uruk-hai Army was designed to accent LOTR LEGO set. If you build it according to the directions, you can snap the wall pieces from 9471 easily into Helm's Deep, expanding the fortress! The large number of minifigs in that set (4 Uruk-hai, 2 Rohan soldiers, and an additional horse) make a great addition to this one, allowing large-scale battles to be waged!
